This one is for every non-morning person out there. A dumpy little mustard-yellow tabby sits hunched over her mug, eyes barely open, tail wrapped around her paws like she's bracing herself before the first sip actually kicks in. There's no drama, no story beyond the obvious — she just needs her coffee, and she needs it now. I couldn't resist giving her that classic squinty, still-waking-up stare; it felt like the most honest expression I could paint.
About This Painting
Watercolor and gouache mixed media on a 2.5"x3.5" ACEO card. Her fur is built from layered mustard and ochre watercolor washes with darker tabby stripes worked in on top, while opaque gouache picks out the little blue mug and the soft curl of steam rising off it so they pop forward from the warmer, softer background. Her eyes are kept deliberately heavy and half-closed — the whole point of the painting.
