I've been painting a lot of tiny creatures with feelings lately, so naturally the next thing to get a face was a tin of sardines. Four of them, packed in tight, staring straight out at whoever just popped the lid — wide-eyed, a little startled, completely unbothered by the fact that they're about to be someone's lunch. I set them against a candy-striped pink-and-white background because a sardine tin deserves at least a little glamour on its way out.
About This Painting
Watercolor and gouache mixed media on a 2.5"x3.5" ACEO card. The fish are built from cool blue-green watercolor washes with tiny opaque gouache highlights along their bellies and eyes, so they catch the light and hold your attention over the flatter tin and stripes behind them. The gold foil-look tin edge and the little pull-tab are picked out in warm ochre gouache to keep that vintage-can feel.
This is a one-of-a-kind original — once it's gone, this exact painting won't exist again.
