This one grew out of the fox with the spider lilies — once I'd drawn one fox spirit for the ink series, I couldn't stop thinking about what she'd look like at full power. So here she is, fully ascended: nine tails, a third eye, and nothing but ink and paper.
She's built from the same fine linework as the rest of the series — dense parallel hatching for the tails, left to fan out and curl like flames until they fill almost the whole card. A scatter of hand-drawn stars and sparkles floats around her, and instead of color this time, I let the linework alone carry all the drama.
In folklore across Japan, Korea, and China, a fox that lives long enough and accumulates enough wisdom grows an extra tail every hundred years, eventually reaching nine — at which point it's said to gain the ability to see and hear everything happening in the world, sometimes shown with an all-seeing third eye like this one. A nine-tailed fox isn't just older or stronger than an ordinary fox; it's a being that has crossed over into something closer to a minor deity, capable of shapeshifting, illusion, and, depending on the story, either great mischief or great protection. That mix of power and unpredictability is exactly what I wanted this piece to feel like.
